What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an infection of the gums and bone that support your teeth. Because it’s often painless in the early stages, many patients don’t know they have it until damage has already begun.

If left untreated, gum disease can lead to:

  • Gum recession
  • Bone loss
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Tooth loss

Research has also linked gum disease to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure.

The good news: when caught early, gum disease can often be controlled—and in some cases reversed.

How We Check for Gum Disease

During your exam, our hygienists carefully evaluate your gum health using a periodontal probe to measure the spaces between your teeth and gums.

  • Healthy gums measure 3mm or less
  • Deeper pockets trap bacteria and are harder to clean
  • Deeper measurements may indicate gum disease

If concerns are found, we’ll clearly explain your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment for you.

Common Signs of Gum Disease

You may have gum disease even if symptoms are mild. Warning signs can include:

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums pulling away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Pus between teeth and gums
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Changes in how your teeth fit together

If you notice any of these signs, early treatment makes a big difference.

Periodontal Treatment Options

Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

When gum pockets are deeper than 3mm, a deep cleaning may be recommended.

This treatment:

  • Removes plaque and tartar below the gumline
  • Smooths root surfaces to help gums heal
  • Reduces infection and inflammation
  • Is performed with local anesthesia for comfort

Ultrasonic Cleaning

We use advanced ultrasonic technology (Cavitron) to gently remove heavy plaque and tartar buildup, allowing for a deeper, more effective cleaning while keeping you comfortable.

Additional Therapies

In some cases, localized antibiotics (such as Arestin) or other medications may be used to help control infection and support healing.

Ongoing Care & Periodontal Maintenance

Once gum disease has occurred, ongoing care is essential to keep it under control. After treatment, many patients are placed on a customized periodontal maintenance schedule to prevent bacteria from returning.

Long-term success depends on:

  • Consistent home care
  • Regular professional cleanings
  • Continued monitoring of gum health

With proper care, periodontal disease can be successfully managed and progression prevented.
