How Dental X-Rays Work
During a dental exam, X-rays pass through your mouth and create images called radiographs.
- Dense structures like teeth and bone absorb more X-rays and appear lighter
- Areas such as decay, infections, or bone loss appear darker
- Existing restorations (fillings or crowns) may appear lighter or darker depending on the material
These images help Dr. Ring detect issues that aren’t visible during a regular exam, allowing for accurate diagnosis and early treatment.
Why Dental X-Rays Are Important
Some dental problems cannot be seen with the naked eye. Dental X-rays can help detect:
- Cavities between teeth or beneath fillings
- Infections or abscesses in the bone
- Gum disease and bone loss
- Developmental abnormalities
- Cysts or certain tumors
Early detection can help prevent more serious problems, reduce treatment costs, and avoid unnecessary discomfort.
How Often Are Dental X-Rays Needed?
There is no one-size-fits-all schedule. The need for dental X-rays depends on your individual oral health, age, and risk factors.
Dr. Ring will consider:
- Your dental and medical history
- Your current oral health
- Signs or symptoms of disease
New patients may need X-rays to evaluate areas not visible during an exam. If you’ve had recent X-rays taken at another office, we’re happy to review them and may not need to repeat imaging.
Children may require X-rays more often than adults because their teeth and jaws are still developing and they are more prone to cavities.
Are Dental X-Rays Safe?
Yes. Dental X-rays use very low levels of radiation, especially with today’s digital technology. We take every precaution to minimize exposure and only recommend X-rays when they are truly necessary for your care.
To put things in perspective, we are exposed to radiation every day from natural sources such as sunlight, soil, and household appliances. Dental X-rays represent a very small fraction of that exposure.
If you have concerns, our team is always happy to explain why X-rays are recommended and how they benefit your health.

“The radiation from dental X-rays is comparable to what you’re exposed to during a short airplane flight.”
